(LA CROSSE) A Wisconsin-based gas station chain is investing in a fuel that at this point has yet to catch on with the driving public. The company hopes to use less exported oil. At a brand new alternative fueling station in La Crosse, a white pickup truck is the first to be filled with compressed natural gas. The car belongs to Kwik Trip CEO Don Zietlow, who's pushing for more alternative fuels. Zietlow says he sees natural gas as the future for cars, "You look at the world and all the alternatives for fuel. I think we're the United States, they tell us we have a 100 year supply of natural gas and if we can use natural gas from our own country and not import crude oil, how much better is it going to be for our country?" Currently, a gallon of compressed natural gas is $1.59, much cheaper than the $3.79 per gallon of regular gas in La Crosse. Zietlow says natural gas is cheap now, but the cost would probably change once more people start using it in their vehicles. Kwik Trip Alternative Fuels Specialist Ruanna Hayes says they'll see how well the station does before expanding natural gas to more stores, "We'd really like to see this more mainstream so people when they look at purchasing a vehicle they can look at those natural gas cars as an option versus your typical cars today and see the cost savings as a benefit to them." There are now 19 sites in Wisconsin that offer compressed natural gas for cars, and Kwik Trip plans on opening two more next month.
