THREE NEW LARGE COMMERCIAL CHEESE PLANTS COMING TO WISCONSIN WPR News - Three new large commercial cheese plants coming to Wisconsin
Tuesday April 10, 2012 by Kristen Durst
(UNDATED) Three new large commercial cheese plants are coming to Wisconsin. John Umhoefer of The Wisconsin Cheesemakers Association says Emmi Roth will build a new plant in Platteville and Belgioioso Cheese is expanding in Pulaski. In addition, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Holland Family Cheese will build a new plant in Thorp. Umhoefer says the new plants are good news for rural Wisconsin, "These are communities where they will hire multiple dozens of people, and good full time jobs. The dairy farmers in the area will see a little competition for their milk, which is great. And that spurs the feed people, the crop consultants, the veterinarians, just an endless list of people who benefit when the dairy industry is doing well." The Platteville Emmi Roth plant is reported to cost around $44 million dollars and is expected to create up to 60 jobs. Belgioioso's new plant will be its sixth in the area. And Holland Family Cheese's is expected to be three times larger than its current facility in Thorp. Umhoefer says cheese exports have been very good the last three years. He says Wisconsin leads the nation in cheese production, and that it's a $26 billion industry in the state.
