(MADISON) Several candidates filed nominating petitions Tuesday (4/10) to run as a Democrat for lieutenant governor in the upcoming recall election. The list includes Wisconsin firefighter's union president Mahlon Mitchell.
Mitchell made a name for himself among Democrats when he was a consistent and vocal presence during last year's State Capitol protests. He's hoping to run in a general recall against Republican Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch.
It's a low-profile position, but Mitchell says he'll get voters to care by talking about Republican cuts to education and what he called attacks on union rights and women's rights, "We're going to talk about the issues. If people don't care about the issues now, then I don't know when they ever will. No matter who's saying them. We're going to keep to the issues and stick to what's going to happen in our state and how we're going to win this thing."
The lieutenant governor has one key responsibility. The officeholder is the next in line to be governor should a sitting governor leave office.
Unlike in regular elections, candidates for governor and lieutenant governor don't run as a ticket in recalls. That raises the possibility that voters could elect a Republican to one position and a Democrat to the other.
Others who turned in signatures to run as a Democrat for lieutenant governor include Bruce Berman, Dale Paul, Ira Robbins, and fake Democrat Isaac Weix.
