DAIRY PRODUCERS TO BEGIN APPLYING FOR '30 BY 20' GRANTS WPR News - Dairy producers to begin applying for '30 by 20' grants
Wednesday April 11, 2012 by Steve Roisum
(UNDATED) The state is taking its first step toward increasing milk output by billions of pounds by 2020. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says producers can now apply for grants of up to $5,000 apiece to help meet the state's goal of producing 30 billion pounds of milk annually by the end of this decade. Nicole Breunig is the project leader for the Dairy 30 by 20 Initiative unveiled by Gov. Scott Walker last month. She says producers can apply for two different types of grants. One would help producers hire a team of business development and expansion experts, "They're starting up the farm, or they could be doing some major changes to their business structure like they're bringing another generation into the farm, or they're looking to create a partnership for the farm." Breunig says farmers could use the other grant to develop what's known as 'dairy profit teams,' "The dairy team would really focus on the cows, the animals, and what's happening on the farms in daily production. That could be enhanced, or improved, that could be talking about the management of the existing operation, or identifying opportunities for the future." Breunig says plans will vary from farm to farm, since each one is unique. Under the program, farmers would have to pay 20% of the grant amount.
