(MADISON) Birdwatchers who can't identify some bird calls, may soon have some help, thanks to a UW-Madison professor who is working on a cell phone application.
Birdwatchers know some birds that can't be seen, can be heard. While top notch birders may be able to identify almost every call, WeBird could help the casual birder. WeBird stands for the Wisconsin Electronic Bird Identification Resource Database. It allows anyone with a smartphone to record a bird's call, send it to a server and get back a message identifying the bird. Mark Berres is an assistant professor of avian biology at UW-Madison, and has been working on WeBird. He says one of the toughest things to set up is that bird calls vary.
Berres says he hopes the technology gets more people involved in protecting birds.
Berres hopes to make WeBIRD available the public by next year, possibly for a small fee. He says first there will be some testing with a university class and possibly with the general public at the UW-Madison arboretum.
