Yet neither libertarian Ed Thompson nor Green Party candidate Jim Young will be allowed in a debate in Wausau. The reason? Native son Jarrod Washburn is pitching for the Anaheim Angels in the fall classic. This will be the first time there will be large scale testing in that region for chronic wasting disease in deer. Greer says the chancellor sent a partisan email to thousands of students encouraging them to vote to for his opponent, Democratic incumbent Tammy Baldwin. Gil Halsted has more . running time 1:20 10/23/02 – Caucus Scandal Taints Western WI Assembly Race (La Crosse) The fallout from the caucus scandal has become an issue in a western Wisconsin assembly race. Sandra Harris reports. running time 1:43 10/22/02 – Democrats Vote For New Leaders (Madison) The most powerful democrat in the legislature isn't powerful anymore. Fellow democrats removed Senator Chuck Chvala from his position as majority leader. That makes way for two interim leaders. Both Democrats and Republicans are trying to recover with their leaders facing criminal misconduct charges. Frederica Freyberg reports. running time 1:29 10/22/02 – McCallum to Attend NRA Rally (West Allis) Governor Scott McCallum is scheduled to appear with actor Charlton Heston at a National Rifle Association rally in West Allis tonight. The event highlights differences between McCallum and Democrat James Doyle on gun control. Chuck Quirmbach reports. running time 1:44 10/19/02 – Top Republicans Charged in Caucus Probe (Madison) Prosecutors have now charged Assembly Republicans with misconduct in office and mis-use of position for private gain. This comes one day after the Senate Majority leader was charged. Frederica Freyberg reports: running time 1:44 10/19/02 – Republicans Speaker's Troubles Could Grow (Madison) Assembly speaker Scott Jensen has more to face than a courtroom soon. Voters in the 98th assembly district in Waukesha County will get to decide if they want to re-elect Jensen or choose one of two other candidates on the November ballot. Chuck Quirmbach reports. running time 1:34 10/18/02 – Republicans Could Be Charged Next in Caucus Probe (Madison) Sweeping charges have been filed against Senate Majority Leader Chuck Chvala. As a result, Chvala has announced he will step down from his leadership position. The Madison democrat has been charged with 20 felony counts. Frederica Freyberg reports. running time 1:59 10/18/02 – More Deer Test Positive for CWD (Madison) More deer have tested positive for Chronic wasting Disease in the Mount Horeb area. And another captive deer on a game farm has also testested positive for the disease. That brings the total to 42 known cases in the state wild deer herd. Gil Halsted as this update. running time 1:30 10/17/02 – Caucus Charges for Chvala (Madison) Milwaukee prosecutors are expected to file criminal charges against the most powerful Democrat in the Wisconsin senate. Charges against Senator Chuck Chvala could come as soon as Thursday. Frederica Freyberg reports. running time 1:57 10/17/02 – Dane Anti-Domestic Violence Money Found (Madison) Dane County officials have come up with money to prosecute domestic abusers and help their victims. Until recently, there was little support for parents who often mourned in isolation. Now, faculty and students at the U-W Madison are using their time and talents to give comfort to those parents. But so far they aren't exactly flying off the shelves. Gil Halsted reports. running time 3:21 10/16/02 – Some Food Pantries Reject Venison (Statewide) Hunters who choose to take to the woods this fall plan to donate a record amount of venison to local charities. But Chronic Wasting Disease is causing many local charities around Wisconsin to think twice about the gift. Terry Bell reports. running time 1:30 10/16/02 – Jury Discrimination Under Scrutiny (Statewide)The United States Supreme Court is looking at a jury discrimination case from Texas. In Wisconsin, some reformers are trying to solve a related but distinct problem. While jury discrimination cases appear relatively rare in Wisconsin, minorities are often under-represented on juries. For some counties, the problem got even worse in the last state budget bill. Several young cranes are following ultralight aircraft over southern Wisconsin on a migration to Florida. The long-term success of the migration plan will depend partly on the ability of a Maryland wildlife center to keep supplying crane chicks. They held a political rally at the state capitol to throw their support behind Democrat Jim Doyle. Some local governments who buy these newspaper ads say they're an unnecessary expense in the computer age. Promoters say the plan is to use corn grown on local farms to produce enough electricity for almost 40,000 homes. They'll put the research "under a microscope" at a symposium in Fond Du Lac. That state passed a law prohibiting any private money in judicial elections. A state representative who toured the extra secure facility this week says that could put the state in violation of a federal court settlement. Chuck Quirmbach reports. running time 2:32 10/12/02 – Milwaukee Zoo Hit Hard by West Nile (Milwaukee) Animal health experts are gathering in Milwaukee, where the county zoo has had the one of the highest number of exotic bird deaths from West Nile virus. One veterinarian says he's surprised by the extent and quick spread of the mosquito-borne disease. Shamane Mills reports. running time 2:32 10/12/02 – Congressional Representatives Defend Iraq Vote (Washington, DC) Democratic members of the U-S House of Representatives from Wisconsin did not oppose military action against Iraq in this week's vote, even though they voted against the White House resolution. Mike Simonson reports from Superior. running time 2:32 10/11/02 – Ease of Absentee Ballot Voting Upsets Clerk (Statewide) Those who want to vote but can't, or won't, go to polls are frustrating some municipal officials. And at least one is advocating for a change in law that allows anyone to use an absentee ballot without giving a reason. Shamane Mills reports. running time 1:48 10/11/02 – Ad Touts Anti-War Sentiment (Statewide) An Ashland peace group is protesting a possible first strike against Iraq, and they will use a full-page newspaper ad to make their stand. S. Supreme Court. The case stems from controversy over school vouchers in the state. Benson Gardner reports. running time 1:29 10/11/02 – Postal Customers Asked to Go to the Curb (Superior) The U.S. Postal Service is hoping customers in northwestern Wisconsin will go along with a plan to end door-to-door delivery, and agree to curbside mailboxes instead. Maria Macioce reports on the latest cost-cutting move by Postal Service. running time 1:30 10/10/02 – Meat Processors Scale Back Because of CWD (Statewide) The Department of Natural Resources is continuing its effort to reassure hunters that most venison harvested in the state is safe to eat. But some meat processors in the state say the fear of Chronic Wasting Disease means they'll be butchering fewer deer this year. Gil Halsted reports. running time 1:30 10/10/02 – Lawmakers Release CWD Funds (Statewide) The state has released another $2 million for the Department of Natural Resources to combat Chronic Wasting Disease. The Joint Finance Committee approved the money, but not without some harsh words for the Department. Frederica Freyberg has more. running time 1:55 10/09/02 – Protestors Stake Out Sen. Kohl's Office (Statewide) Anti-war activists staged sit-ins at U.S. Senator Herb Kohl's offices across the state today. In Madison they vowed to stay put until the senator states he will vote no to war with Iraq. Frederica Freyberg reports. running time 2:01 10/09/02 – Cuts in Domestic Abuse Prevention Grants (Statewide) Women's advocates say cutbacks in county government could have a devastating effect on their programs. But as Mike Simonson reports, the winter months loom as another challenge. running time 1:27 10/09/02 – Court to Determine Who Pays for Cleanup (Madison) Milwaukee-based Johnson Controls went before the Wisconsin Supreme Court Tuesday). At issue are 11 sites the company contaminated, which made the Superfund list for bad environmental problems. The company has already cleaned them up. At issue is who has to pay for that cleanup -- Johnson Controls or its insurance company. So a lower court ruling stands. It would put David Oakley in prison if he has more kids he can't afford. Shamane Mills reports. running time 1:40 10/08/02 – Peace Activists Rally Against War (Madison) A coalition of Peace groups in Madison will hold a series of teach-in's, sit in's and rallys this week to mark the first anniversary of the U-S war in Afghanistan. At a news conference in the state capitol organizers also spoke out against plans for a U-S war on Iraq. Gil Halsted reports. running time 1:33 10/08/02 – Great Lakes Governors Races Competitve (Statewide) Wisconsin isn't the only Midwest state with a competitive race for governor this year. Political analysts say that come January, there may be as many as five new governors in the Great Lakes region. That amount of change could affect environmental policy. Most people who call, write, or email are opposed to war. But that might not reflect the general population of Wisconsin. The grant funds prosecution of domestic violence perpetrators. The district attorneys office found out yesterday it had lost the money. Democrat Jim Doyle today held news conferences to detail his plans to balance the budget. The bad news affects non-profit organizations that volunteered to help. They were shut down in a settlement with the State Ethics Board after allegations surfaced of lawmakers campaigning on state time. Now the Ethics Board is looking for ways to put more teeth in its policing role.
