(September 2002) NEWS ARCHIVES 9/30/02 – U.S. Senate Considers Iraq Resolution (Washington, DC) Congress is gearing up for debate on a resolution authorizing the use of force in Iraq. The Senate might start debate as early as Tuesday. But Wisconsin U.S. Senator Russ Feingold is one of several Democrats asking for changes in the President's plan. Connie Walker has more. running time 1:18 9/30/02 – Public Hearing on Possible War in Iraq (Madison) Two state legislators will hold a public hearing today on the possibility of a war with Iraq. State Senator Fred Risser of Madison and Representative Frank Boyle of Superior will host an open mic in the state capitol so citizens can speak out for, or against the war. Gil Halsted reports. running time 1:18 9/30/02 – MKE County Urged to Support Civil Liberties (Milwaukee) Peace activists will push the Milwaukee County Board to adopt a resolution safeguarding civil liberties. They're responding to their detention at a Milwaukee airport in April. Benson Gardner reports. running time 1:28 9/30/02 – Protestors Want Peace (Madison) Dozens of protestors marched around the state Capitol Sunday, hoping to influence lawmakers as they consider a war against Iraq. Gil Halsted has more. running time 3:23 9/30/02 – Worrisome Decline in Number of Hunters (Superior) The Department of Natural Resources is hunting for hunters for this November's deer season. Fear of the spread of chronic wasting disease is blamed for a 22% decrease in the number of deer license applications. Mike Simonson reports that this hunt is crucial to control any already high deer population. running time 1:24 9/28/02 – Lawmakers Graded on Conservation (Madison) A diverse group of environmentalists, hunter and angler groups are banding together to influence voters and legislators. The recently-formed Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters is out with its first-ever scorecard indicating how lawmakers did or didn't help the state's natural resources. Shamane Mills reports how the group hopes to play a role in the upcoming elections. running time 1:41 9/28/02 – Scammers Charge to Avoid Telemarketers (Madison) In an ironic twist, some telemarketers may have found a new opportunity for profits. The source is the popularity of Wisconsin's "Do Not Call" list. Train traffic in the Stevens Point area has dramatically increased in the last decade...and safety equipment at the crossings hasn't kept pace. Patty Murray reports. running time 1:32 9/27/02 – Activists Call for Peace, Not War in Iraq (Undated) A group of Wisconsin Peace activists are holding a combinaton music festival and teach in this weeknd on a farm in northwestern Wisconsin. Gil Halsted reports. running time 1:24 9/27/02 – Attack Ad Called "Pack of Lies" (Madison) If you turn on your T-V tonight you can't miss the latest wave of political attack ads in the governor's race. Democrat Jim Doyle's camp today is calling new TV commericals for Governor Scott McCallum a pack of lies. The Governor says the ads get it right. Frederica Freyberg reports. running time 2:06 9/26/02 – Budget Cuts Could Threaten Health (LaCrosse) Difficult economic times are forcing counties across Wisconsin to cut budgets. In some cases, officials are learning there's a fine line between which cuts a post health risk and which do not. Sandra Harris reports. running time 1:24 9/25/02 – Corrections Budget Under Scrutiny (Madison) The cost of Wisconsin's prisons came under fire in the primary election. Tuesday, the Department of Corrections detailed just how much it costs to lock up criminals. Agency representatives appeared before a legislative task force trying to find some cuts. Wisconsin faces a projected $2.8 billion deficit. Frederica Freyberg reports. running time 2:12 9/25/02 – Private Lab Test Available for CWD (Statewide) Thousands of hunters in Wisconsin will be able to test their deer for chronic wasting disease this fall at a private laboratory in Wauwautosa. But some experts say even a negative test result is no guarantee the meat is safe to eat. Gil Halsted reports. running time 1:34 9/25/02 – First Federal Screeners Working at GB Airport (Green Bay) Wisconsin has its first Federal Security Screeners on duty, at Austin Straubel Airport in Green Bay. Congress mandated that all screeners at commercial airports become federal employees by November 19th of this year. The order was in response to last year's terrorist attacks. Patty Murray has more on what this means for travellers. running time 1:30 9/25/02 – Milwaukee Labyrinth Draws Spiritual Seekers (Milwaukee) New medical advancements are credited with improving people's physical well-being in various ways. And with increasing acceptance of the link between physical and mental health, some are using ancient traditions for emotional healing. Shamane Mills reports on the use of labyrinths. One recently opened in Milwaukee near a south side hospital. running time 3:53 9/24/02 – Disabled Activists Want Say in Gov Race (Madison) A statewide coalition advocating for the needs of people with disabilities is hoping to have an impact on this year's gubenatorial race. Gil Halsted reports on the 'People Can't Wait' coalition. running time 1:34 9/23/02 – Appeals Court Reaches Major Domestic Violence Ruling (Madison) A Wisconsin Appeals Court has upheld the actions of two police officers in Outagamie County. The officers responded to a domestic violence report. They entered the house even after the alleged victim told them to leave. Benson Gardner reports. running time 2:06 9/23/02 – Schools Have a New Money Source (Eau Claire) There's a new funding source available for schools in western Wisconsin - and it's not from taxpayers. Rather it comes from the dairy industry. The action comes following the discovery this week of the first deer on a captive farm to test positive for Chronic Wasting disease. Gil Halsted has this update. running time 2:07 9/21/02 – POW/MIA Vigil Held This Weekend (Superior) A vigil for prisoners of war and soldiers listed as missing in action takes on an urgent tone this weekend. Vietnam veterans caution the military to have a clear mission if the United States is going into Iraq, as well as a clear strategy to get out. Mike Simonson has the story from Superior. running time 1:33 9/21/02 – Doyle Denounces Waste of Tobacco Settlement (Green Bay) Gubenatorial challenger Jim Doyle is attacking Scott McCallum's handling of the state's tobacco fund money. Governor McCallum and the Legislature used Wisconsin's settlement money to plug a billion dollar hole in the state budget. Doyle says the money should have been used on anti-smoking efforts and other types of preventive care. Patty Murray reports. running time 1:30 9/21/02 – Report: Microwave Not Cause of Cancer Cases (Madison) 20 people who work for Oscar Meyer in Madison did not get cancer at work, even though they all worked in the same division. At least that's according to state inspectors who released findings of their studies this week. Terry Bell has more. running time 1:06 9/20/02 – Tommy Thompson Stumps for McCallum (Milwaukee) Tommy Thompson will campaign for Scott McCallum Friday at a rally in Milwaukee. Some political scientists say having the former governor help the current governor brings both pluses and minuses to Republican hopes this fall. Chuck Quirmbach reports. running time 1:55 9/20/02 – CWD Found in Private Deer Herd (Portage) A deer killed on a private hunting preserve in Portage County has tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease. The Department of Transportation says drivers are on pace to tie or break a bloody record. Traffic cops say many of the deaths didn't have to happen. Melba Lara reports. running time 1:36 9/19/02 – D-A Can Proceed in Caucus Probe (Madison) A Dane County Cirucit Judge has ruled a prosecutor in the caucus scandal probe can continue on the case. Judge Sarah O'Brien ruled Dane County District Attorney Brian Blanchard can continue his probe. Critics claimed Blanchard had a conflict of interest because he got help with his nomination papers from a caucus employee. That alleged conflict of interest was one of the arguments heard before the state's high court. Lawyers representing law-makers, staff and even the judge in the secret hearings over the caucus scandal went before the state Supreme court. Frederica Freyberg reports. running time 2:36 9/19/02 – Lawsuit Threatened Against Farm (St. Croix County) Two environmental groups are threatening to sue a large dairy in western Wisconsin. They say runoff from manure ponds and feed barns at the farm are polluting the Rush River. The company that fought for two years to gain permits to build the plant has decided to let the permits lapse. The case involves a patient in a psychiatric ward who was permanently injured after going out a third story window. As Frederica Freyberg reports, that patient wants to recover damages even though the hospital says she caused her own injuries. running time 2:22 9/06/02 – Clinton Campaigns for Democrats in WI (Madison) Former President Bill Clinton says he'd like Democrats to regain control of the House of Representatives this fall and the White House in 2004. The service became available for the first time today. In the first two hours, 11-thousand people signed up. A million households are expected to register.
