4/30/02 - Medical Workers Say "Si!" To Spanish Classes

(Green Bay) According to the Census, there are twice as many Hispanics in this country now than there were ten years ago. Some companies want their employees to learn the basics of Spanish to talk with their clients or customers. Patty Murray recently joined a Spanish class for Dentists and has this report.

4/30/02 - Controversial Powerline Faces First Lawsuits

(Marathon County) A Wisconsin utility has started some preliminary engineering on a giant proposed powerline from Duluth to Wausau. And, it's experiencing its first legal battles with people who don't want the line going through their land. An opposition group accuses the utility of using questionable legal tactics. (Eau Claire) The spread of chronic wasting disease in southern Wisconsin has some calling for a ban on the intentional feeding and baiting of deer in rural areas. In one western Wisconsin county, the practice is widespread. Mary Jo Wagner has more.

4/29/02 - Environmental Groups Want to Curb Manure Spills

(Madison) The Assembly version of the state budget would cut funds for regulating manure spills at large farms. Environmental groups say that means citizens will have to enforce the Clean Water Act on their own by suing farmers who violate manure management rules . Gil Halsted has more.

(Statewide) A portion of the Farm Bill takes aim at commercial dog breeding operations commonly known as "puppy mills." The so-called "Puppy Protection Act" calls for limits on breeding and requires that animals be socialized. But some dog lovers say the act could potentially affect hobby breeders and pet owners. (Madison) Madison's city council has yet to decide whether landlords will be required to accept tenants using federal housing assistance. After several hours of debate at this week's meeting, the city council voted to table the housing ordinance. Jennifer Garrett reports.

(Appleton) The Wisconsin Supreme Court took its act on the road to Appleton today. The so-called "Justice on Wheels" program takes Justices outside of Madison to hear cases. In one case before the Court, Justices are being asked to define what constitutes operating a snowmobile. Patty Murray reports.

(Undated) A new federal rule banning the sale of food products containing hemp oil or seeds has sparked a new debate over legalizing the cultivation of the industrial version of marijuana. Advocates for industrial hemp have challenged the hemp foods rule. A federal appeals court in California is scheduled to hear arguments in the case today. Gil Hasted reports.
