MUSIC FOR THE 2003 HOLIDAY SEASON

Wisconsin Public Radio's special holiday music programming will be heard on stations of the
NPR News and Classical Music Network.

Sat, December 13th 8-9pm Riverwalk, Live from the Landing "Home for the Holidays"
Break out the ornaments and turn up the volume. The Jim Cullum Jazz Band and special guests get in the mood with music for trimming the tree, stuffing stockings, and sharing the holiday spirit. Special guests include pianist Dick Hyman, vocalist Rebecca Kilgore and Bob Wilber on soprano sax.
 
Sun, December 21st 3-4pm Welcome Christmas!
John Birge hosts the annual concert from Philip Brunelle and VocalEssence, featuring two brilliant new carols for chorus and percussion.
 
Sun, December 21st 5-6pm Simply Folk
Judy Rose's choices of traditional music for Christmas and the Solstice.
 
Sun, December 21st 6-8pm The Christmas Revels
Carols, songs, processionals and ritual dance tunes selected from the live Christmas Revels performances that took place around the country last year, highlighting a variety of eras, countries and cultures.
 
Sun, December 21st 8-9pm Season's Greetings from Thistle and Shamrock
Fiona Ritchie sends holiday greetings with the help of John Renbourn, Nightnoise, Medieval Babes, Maddie Prior, Maddie Sansone, and Ensemble Choral du Bout de Monde.
 
Mon, December 22nd 7pm Handel's "Messiah"
A live recording at Dublin's Point Theater in April, 1992, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the first performance. Sir Neville Marriner conducts the Academy and Chorus of St. Martin in the Fields, as well as soloists Sylvia McNair, Anne Sofie von Otter, Jerry Hadley and Robert Lloyd.
 
Tues, December 23rd 8-9pm Carols for Christmas
Narrator Ellen Kushner joins the American Boychoir at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in a live performance of Benjamin Britten's A Ceremony of Carols.
 
Wed, December 24th 9-10:30am A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols
The live broadcast from King's College Chapel in Cambridge, England. This annual event, based on a liturgy created in 1918, weaves together scripture and song and is hosted by Michael Barone.
 
Wed, December 24th 1-2pm Wondrous Love: An Early American Christmas
Rediscover American musical traditions with selections ranging from New England singing school repertoire and Shaker songs to shape-note hymns from the Sacred Harp traditions and simple countryside folksongs. Featured performers include the Boston Camerata, Seattle's Tudor Choir and Northern Harmony from Vermont.
 
Wed, December 24th 2-3pm Echoes of Christmas with the Dale Warland Singers
The annual concert from the Dale Warland Singers, America's premiere mixed-voice a capella choir. The centerpiece of this year's program is Francis Poulenc's Quatre Motets pour le Temps de Noel.
 
Wed, December 24th 6-7:30pm A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols
A rebroadcast of this morning's live program from King's College in Cambridge, England
 
Thur, December 25th 1-3pm Music of the Baroque Christmas
Brass and choral music of the 16th and 17th centuries by composers such as Gabrieli, Monteverdi and Praetorius
 
Sun, December 28th 2-4pm Milestones
Wisconsin Public Radio's Music Staff remember composers, performers and significant musical events of 2003.
 
Wed, December 31st 8pm New Year's Eve Ball
Norman Gilliland and Vicki Nonn host a live broadcast of the Madison Symphony Orchestra's Viennese Ball, conducted by John DeMain.
 
Thur, January 1st 10am New Year's Day from Vienna 2004
The Vienna Philharmonic, under the direction of Riccardo Muti, broadcast live from Golden Hall of the Musikverein. NPR's Korva Coleman hosts the world's most popular classical music concert, this year marking the bicentennial of Johann Strauss, Sr.
