The weather was cold enough on Wednesday to close the majority of schools in Wisconsin, with wind chill factors in the minus 20-to-30 degree range in the morning.
Temperatures will rise above zero degrees on Thursday afternoon, but after that the cold snap is expected to get its second wind Thursday night through Friday.
“Unfortunately, we’re going to get cold tonight, and then another storm moving through on Thursday is going to bring another push of arctic air for Friday,” said Dan Baumgart, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in La Crosse. “So the cold snap’s going to last through the very early morning hours on Saturday, before we see some moderation in temperatures.”

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has a list of places around Wisconsin where people can get out of the dangerous cold. In Milwaukee, police are combing the city to help the homeless find shelter.
