More People Will Be Traveling On Labor Day Weekend This Year

Around 713,000 travelers in Wisconsin are expected to travel this Labor Day weekend.

Roy Hinz of AAA Wisconsin says the number of travelers is up by 3.4 percent from last year. “Of that number approximately 637,000 will be traveling by car, 26,000 by air, and the rest by other transportation,” he says. “Basically, it’s shaping up to be a very favorable and positive Labor Day travel scenario.”

If the travel forecast holds true, AAA says it would be the busiest Labor Day since 2008. Around 85 percent of travelers are expected to travel by car, and Hinz says they’ll be spending less at the pump this year.

“I don’t know if you remember, but it was it [Hurricane] Isaac that came through and we did hit record levels for gas prices for Labor Day last year,” says Hinz. “I think it was almost approaching $4.”

In Wisconsin, the current average price gas is $3.57 a gallon, 32 cents lower than last year. AAA says the roads will likely be busiest on Friday and Monday. The average traveler is expected to travel nearly 600 miles this weekend and will spend around $800.
