Milwaukee’s police union is upset with Police Chief Ed Flynn in a dispute tied to the case of Christopher Manney, the former officer who was fired after shooting and killing an unarmed black man in 2014.

Union leadership also made a point of urging rank and file officers to work safely.

Milwaukee’s Fire and Police Commission has upheld Flynn’s firing of Manney, partly for Manney not calling for backup prior to his shooting of Dontre Hamilton last year.

Mike Crivello, the police union president, called the Commission’s ruling a travesty and said Manney may appeal to a circuit court.

In the meantime, Crivelllo’s advice to other Milwaukee officers:

“What we are encouraging them is to be safe, encouraging them to ensure they have a partner with them when they respond to scenes.”

Crivello wouldn’t say if that will delay response times.

Chief Flynn said the morale of some Milwaukee officers may be damaged. But he said the Police Department is committed to the citizens’ safety.
