A $10 million housing development is now open in Milwaukee for families previously living in shelters, homeless, or at risk of homelessness.
All 37 units at Maskani Place are subsidized, requiring people to pay no more than 30 percent of their income.
Mercia Harris-Williams and her two children will live in the complex. She says she’s honored to be there.

“You don’t come across something like this every day,” said Harris-Williams. “You don’t have people that help you every day. So for us, our family, we really appreciate it and we’re grateful.”
The Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority is helping finance the Milwaukee building, along with local banks and the city of Milwaukee. Residents also have access to help with employment training, job searches, finding childcare and developing financial literacy.
Plans for a similar project in Madison are underway.
