Helping families facing hunger in Wisconsin!

Wisconsin Public Radio has been offering the "Food for 40" thank-you gift during one pledge drive a year since 2010.

In that time, WPR listeners have provided more than 200,000 meals via the "Food for 40" thank-you gift!

Below are "Frequently Asked Questions" and the answers about this program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Which food banks benefit from“Food for 40”?
A: Since Wisconsin Public Radio is a statewide network, we chose the six Second Harvest/Feeding America food banks that cover the state of Wisconsin. WPR sends the value of the “Food for 40” thank-you gift to the food bank that serves the donor's zip code:

Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin
Headquartered in Madison; serves southwestern Wisconsin

Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin
Headquartered in Milwaukee; serves eastern Wisconsin

Second Harvest Heartland
Headquartered in St. Paul, MN; serves western Wisconsin

Feed My People
Headquartered in Eau Claire as a subsidiary distribution outlet of Second Harvest Heartland; serves west central Wisconsin

Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank
Headquartered in Duluth, MN; serves northwestern Wisconsin
www.northernlakesfoodbank.org

Channel One Food Bank and Food Shelf
Headquartered in Rochester, MN; serves La Crosse County, Wisconsin
www.channel-one.org

Q: What Food Bank gets the value of the “Food for 40” thank-you gift if I don't live in Wisconsin?
A: We distribute the out-of-state requests for “Food for 40” evenly among the six food bank partners in Wisconsin, listed above.

Q: How much does a “Food for 40” thank-you gift cost WPR?
A: When you give $120 and select “Food for 40” as your thank-you gift, Wisconsin Public Radio gives $8 (which is 6.7% of your $120 pledge) to the Second Harvest/Feeding America food bank that serves your zip code. When you request a traditional thank-you gift (book, CD, mug, etc.), WPR generally spends 10% of the donation amount on purchasing, packaging and shipping that gift. Choosing “Food for 40” instead of a traditional thank-you gift costs WPR less.

Q: What will the food banks be able to do with the $8?
A: On average, the Second Harvest/Feeding America food banks in Wisconsin will be able to provide about 40 meals with $8. These food banks are non-profit organizations and they receive food donations as well as discounts on food purchases.

Q: How does selecting the “Food for 40” thank-you gift affect the tax-deductibility of donations?
A: There is no “fair market tax value” of “Food for 40” so you will be able to deduct the full $120 donation on your taxes. If you select another thank-you gift (book, CD, etc.), that might affect the tax-deductibility of your gift. Wisconsin Public Radio will send you a tax statement in the mail, which will indicate your total tax-deductible amount.

Q: Will WPR donors be added to the mailing lists of those food banks and receive solicitations from them?
A: No. We do not share the personal information of our donors with other organizations, and we will not be sharing any donor information with the food banks.

Q: Can you pass more than $8 of my pledge on to the food bank?
A: “Food for 40” is a set thank-you gift with a value of $8. For a pledge of $120 to WPR, you can elect to have one “Food for 40” given to area food banks instead of receiving a traditional thank-you gift such as a book or CD. For your donation of $240, you can elect to have two “Food for 40”s given to area food banks, and so on.

Q: How can I be sure the Food Banks will use the thank-you gift for food?
A: These food banks maintain high ratings by Charity Navigator and on average, 95 cents of every dollar donated supports programs that help Wisconsin families facing hunger. That means just 5 cents of every dollar is used for things such as administrative costs and food transportation. As members of Feeding America, the nation’s largest charitable hunger-relief organization, Second Harvest/Feeding America food banks that serve Wisconsin residents follow guidelines put forth by Feeding America, and their operations are monitored to ensure they meet the highest standards of charitable food distribution.

Q: How will WPR use my donation?
A: Your donation supports Wisconsin Public Radio programming. During the winter pledge drive, we are offering WPR donors an opportunity to support the radio programs they enjoy and to choose a thank-you gift that will help feed Wisconsin families facing hunger. If you chose “Food for 40,” Wisconsin Public Radio gives a specified amount to support the Second Harvest/Feeding America food bank that serves your zip code. If you do not choose “Food for 40” (and did not elect to receive a different thank-you gift) the entire donation will be used to support WPR. Either way, the donation to Wisconsin Public Radio will be used to support the WPR programs you listen to.
