About a dozen officials from several state agencies met with town and county residents in Ashland Friday to hear what locals need as part of ongoing flood recovery efforts.

Residents asked questions about road repairs, detours and financial assistance in what was one of three meetings in flood-hit areas across northern Wisconsin. The state will split the cost with locals for matching funds often required when they receive federal aid, said Brian Satula, director of Wisconsin Emergency Management.

“There are creative ways to make sure that they can make their match,” he said. “It’s not pure dollars out of their pocket.”

Towns have been concerned about the cost of repairs, said Luis Salas, Town of Sanborn chairman.

“The towns have been … put through such a limited budget that we do not have the resources to respond to an emergency need,” he said.

Towns and counties can use in-kind services like hours spent working on emergency repairs as part of their local match, Satula said.
