Photo editor and digital producer Andy Adams said he loves photography. However, he lives in Madison -- a city with a strong arts scene but with a limited number of venues for exhibitions of contemporary photography.
So, Adams created his own photography gallery and exhibition space on the Internet. Today, the website that he built, FlakPhoto.com, is at the center of an international conversation about the future of contemporary photography in the digital age.
FlakPhoto has pioneered exclusively digital exhibitions of contemporary photography. Adams recently curated “Making Pictures of People,” a collection of recent portrait photography. The project is a partnership with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Mo.
Adams said that while the experience of going into a museum to look at art is important.
“One of the reasons I do what I do is wanting to bring the photography experience out into the world,” he said.
A digital exhibition, Adams said, is a portable art gallery.
“Now, you can look at it whenever you want to,” he said.
Adams reviewed more than 10,000 images before selecting the 27 photographers included in “Making Pictures of People.” Last year, he teamed up with the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design to produce “Looking at the Land – 21st Century American Views.” Both exhibitions are available on his website.
