Lawmakers held a public hearing on Wednesday for a bill that would allow members of the military who are stationed in Wisconsin for at least a year to obtain a concealed carry permit.

State Sen. Van Wanggaard, R-Racine, is a co-sponsor of the bill. He said that while Wisconsin has reciprocity for carrying a concealed weapon — a practice sometimes referred to as CCW — with 29 other states, there is currently no option for service members from states without reciprocity.

“This means that even though if that person has the extensive firearm training provided by the United States military and/or a CCW permit in 20 other states, they would not be allowed to carry concealed in Wisconsin,” said Wanggaard.

Wanggard called the measure “commonsense.” He also said that if a member is redeployed elsewhere or dishonorably discharged, they would have to surrender the Wisconsin CCW permit.
