La Crosse County is one of 60 communities nationwide chosen to have a financial coach work with veterans and people who are economically vulnerable.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau launched the Financial Coaching Initiative to help veterans transition back to civilian life and to get low-income residents “on the path to financial independence.”
La Crosse County is the only Wisconsin site chosen for the program.

Financial coach Susan Taylor said clients will drive the process and they will work together as a team, whether it’s cutting ties from predatory lenders or setting up a bank account.
“We identify that goal and we identify their strengths. Then with encouragement, accountability, and a good action plan, we can empower that consumer to move forward with behavior change,” Taylor said.
The position is supported through a federally funded two-year grant and is housed in the La Crosse County University of Wisconsin-Extension office.
