As the state Department of Justice launches its investigation into the shooting death of Tony Robinson on Friday night, Madison Police Chief Mike Koval has identified the officer involved in the incident.
Koval held a news conference on Saturday in which he revealed the officer who shot Robinson to be Matt Kenny, a 12-year veteran in the force
Koval also confirmed that Robinson was unarmed at the time of the shooting.

“That’s going to make things much more complicated for the investigators, for the public, to accept, understand, and to wait patiently for what other circumstances, if any, were there that were attendant to this scene such that deadly force had to be used,” said Koval.
Meanwhile, state Attorney General Brad Schimel released the following statement regarding the incident:
“I offer my sympathy to the family of the young man who lost his life this morning. As a parent, I can only imagine the heartbreak they must be feeling right now in the wake of this tragedy.”
Likewise, I am concerned for the officer involved in this incident, who I imagine is experiencing great trauma, as well.”
They are all in my thoughts and prayers.”
Schimel also said that the DOJ had begun its investigation of the incident. The DOJ is leading the investigation in compliance with a 2013 law requiring all police-involved shootings to be investigated by an outside agency.
