U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson says Rep. Paul Ryan is the only person who can unify House Republicans as speaker.

The senator’s remarks come as many representatives within the GOP are trying to convince Ryan to run for the speakership, now that Rep. Kevin McCarthy has said he will not seek the position.

Johnson, speaking at a luncheon hosted by the political website WisPolitics on Friday, said he does not know if Ryan is interested in running for the leadership post. He also said the question of whether to seek the speaker position is going to be a “difficult” one for Ryan, especially since chairmanship of the House Ways and Means Committee has always been the perfect position for Ryan.

Johnson also said he doesn’t know if Ryan would want to take on the time commitment of being speaker, which requires traveling across the country helping Republicans and raising money.
