  • Responsibility And Blame In The Ashley Madison Data Breach

Making good on a threat, a hacker group called Team Impact appears to have released the personal information of 37 million users of the site AshleyMadison.com. The information includes names, user names, addresses, phone numbers, birth dates, and details of credit card transactions as well as sexual preferences. The site is run by Avid Life Media and is marketed for people interested in cheating on their spouses, with the slogan: “Life is short. Have an affair.”

The hacker group announced it had stolen the user data last month and threatened to release the entirety of it if the site was not shut down. The site was not shut down and Team Impact released the information Tuesday. Early reporting has suggested that the dump is real and has revealed thousands of government email addresses as well email accounts linked to known individuals. The company, Avid Life Media, is working with law enforcement agencies in Canada and the U.S. to investigate the data breach and remove any information posted unlawfully.
