  Half-Time Assistant Producer/Researcher (deadline: Jan 31, 2009)

Here On Earth: Radio Without Borders with Jean Feraca, www.hereonearth.org, Wisconsin Public Radio's international news and global cultural affairs program, seeks one to two half-time Assistant Producer/Researchers.

The production staff of Here On Earth is looking for a dynamic graduate student or post-graduate for a demanding/rewarding job as a member of a 5-person team to assist in producing a live global cultural affairs call-in program. Here On Earth is currently broadcast statewide on weekday afternoons from 3:00pm to 4:00pm on the Ideas Network of Wisconsin Public Radio, webcast and podcast worldwide on the Internet, and is currently expanding our audience through social networking. This position is classified as LTE (Limited Term Employment); is paid on an hourly basis and carries no benefits.

Duties of the Here on Earth Assistant Producer/Researcher:
  • Work with production team in proposing program guests and topics, producing programs, and developing program content for our Inside Islam series (www.insideislam.wisc.edu).
  • Conduct pre-interviews, take notes, synthesize information and prep host.
  • Assist in researching program topics using multiple sources and Internet skills.
  • Report to production team on university-wide events and faculty research projects as possible program sources.
  • Attend daily editorial meetings with production team.
  • Follow leads as directed.
  • Write broadcast copy for promotional uses.
  • Function as a liaison with the UW's Division of International Studies, cultivating relationships with various Division departments and producing programs using University leads.
  • Maintain contact with Here on Earth's Faculty Advisory Board, organizing meetings, developing agendas, and writing reports.
The ideal candidate has excellent communication skills and a background in communication arts, journalism, English, comparative literature, global studies, anthropology, or a related humanistic discipline; is extroverted, a good networker, exercises initiative and enjoys working as a part of a productive team; has a keen interest in the world at large and its cultures. Radio skills may be acquired on the job. Knowledge of foreign languages is desirable. International students, especially those with a background in Islamic studies, are encouraged to apply.
