Richard Ellis, author of The Book of Sharks, introduces us to a fish that can weigh in at 1500 pounds and speed up to 55 miles per hour, an Atlantic northern bluefin can travel from New England to the Mediterranean, then turn around and swim back; one of the biggest, fastest, and most highly evolved marine animals now hovering on the brink of extinction. I once visited a tuna museum in Sardinia and marveled.

- Tsuri 8/19/08: "I am a faithful listener and try to play all your Podcasts. It is quite a feat to be able to put together such interesting programs day in, day out. Your program on the Blue Fin Tuna, and the short discussion on the Old Man and the Sea, has prompted me to share with you a communication I had with Hemingway himself back in 1959 when I was living in Israel. I was 16 at the time, and probably quite nerdy. I got into an argument with a Scout Master about the Old Man and the Sea. As only a 16 year old would have the chutzpah to do, I asked the author to referee. Amazingly enough, he got the letter, and responded. He must have gotten a kick out of it. I was correct!!!"

That is, until I read Mr. Ellis' book. Today, I am going back to other meats, because I too feel this fish is one of the most beautiful and would much rather see it in the continue a life in the wild and not on my plate."
