Heat wave may have caused Milwaukee deaths

Last week’s high temperatures may have caused the premature deaths of some people in Milwaukee.

The recent heat wave has caused a few deaths elsewhere in Wisconsin. Now the Milwaukee County medical examiner says up to five people in Milwaukee may have died due to high temperatures.

Milwaukee Health Commissioner Bevan Baker says it’s important for residents to look out for those with vulnerable conditions during extreme weather.

Jason Liu is an emergency medicine physician at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee. He says that an increase in emergency room visits during heat waves is common. He also says the easiest way to combat heat related illness is to drink fluids and stay in cool environments.

There is evidence to suggest that even being in an air conditioned environment for 15 or 20 minutes a day can reduce people’s risk of getting heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Dr. Liu also says that severe weather conditions can exacerbate chronic medical conditions, and that those with chronic illness should be sure to take all of their medications during these times.
