Canadian firm Enbridge Energy announced this week that it will cut 5 percent of its workforce. More than 500 workers in Canada and the United States will lose their jobs.

The oil and gas transportation company said Wednesday that it is cutting 370 jobs in Canada and 160 workers in the U.S. About 50 employees in Duluth and Superior are among those affected by the layoffs.

This is the second time in the last year that Enbridge has laid off workers. The company announced last November it was letting go a separate group of 500 employees.

Enbridge spokesman Michael Barnes wrote in an email the layoffs are part of an organizational review that began earlier this year.

“It is focused on what we need to do to achieve our strategy of growth and diversification, enhance our competitiveness, and allow us to capitalize on opportunities now and into the future,” Barnes wrote. “Throughout this process, Enbridge is committed to treating people fairly and with respect.”

The staff reduction was not related to the company’s $28 billion deal to buy Spectra Energy in September or slumping in oil prices, Barnes said.

He added that none of the cuts will compromise the safety of the company’s operations.
