  • Madison-Based Expert Offers Tips To Improve Running

One of the first signs of spring in Wisconsin is the appearance of runners and joggers out on the streets.

Shalon Holbeck, the manager of the Madison-based running shoe store Movin’ Shoes, is offering some tips whether a runner is just starting out or looking to take it to the next level.

    • Join a group of runners.

“Find a group of runners that fits your needs,” said Holbeck.

A running group can provide structure for beginning and advanced runners alike who’d like some company along the way, Holbeck said. Groups can be found by checking with local running stores, newspapers, and even yoga studios.

    • Set reasonable goals.

It might not be realistic to think a would-be runner, fresh from a winter on the couch, can hop up and run for five miles. Holbeck suggests setting some slightly less ambitious goals at first, and then ramping up the workout.

Doing too much too fast can lead to injury and burn-out, so Holbeck recommends “going by time” — that is, planning runs by the minute instead of by the mile.

    • Get good gear.

As far as gear goes, running shoes matter.

“Getting the right fit is key,” said Holbeck.

One trick of the trade: Bring old running shoes into the store so the staff can evaluate the wearer’s running pattern based on how the shoe has been worn down. With so many styles, Holbeck said one thing to keep in mind is that “a more stiff shoe gives you more support. A more flexible shoe will make your foot work a little differently.”

As for picking a shoe off the rack based on color? It may be tempting, but it’s not a good way to go.

    • Check your form.

For the advanced and beginning runner, form can be an issue. As a general rule of thumb, when a runner is swinging their arms, they shouldn’t let them cross the center of their body.

“Your body shouldn’t be swinging back and forth,” Holbeck said.

Beyond these basic tips, keep hydrated in warmer weather, know your route, and above all, Holbeck said, remember that running is fun.
