Officials Still Unsure Of What Caused Blaze

By

Emergency workers have put out a wildfire in Juneau County that had forced people to evacuate more than 40 homes on Monday.

According to the Juneau County Sheriff’s Department, emergency workers have extinguished the 200-acre wildfire that spread near the village of Necedah. No structures were damaged and no residents were injured, but one firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation and later released.

The cause of what’s being called the “Railroad Fire” is still under investigation. Department of Natural Resources spokesman Mike Hillstrom said the blaze started in grassy and forest areas.

“The fire was burning mainly through some grass in the understory. There was an occasional tree that burned and then some cornfield, and a few other things that burned as well,” said Hillstrom.

Hillstrom said every Wisconsin county is under high fire danger, meaning burning permits are canceled and campfires are strongly discouraged.
