Paul Simon is a most successful American musician and singer-songwriter. He helped South Africa’s Ladysmith Black Mambazo launch their career. Simon’s fame, influence, and commercial success began as part of the duo Simon & Garfunkel, formed in 1964 with musical partner Art Garfunkel. 7. Arthur Lyman ‘Misirlou’ #714 Tk 5 2.56

Arthur Lyman was an American jazz vibraphone and marimba player. His ensemble popularized a style of faux (foo-Polynesian) music in the 1950s and 1960s. That sound would later be known as exotica. Lyman also played some guitar, piano, and drums, as well as paying careful attention to producing stereophonic LP albums complete with elaborate and lively percussion with rich bass textures. With friends, Lyman, known as the “King Of Lounge Music”, gives us (Mee-sear-lou) Misirlou.

14. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan/Peter Gabriel ‘Taboo’ Alb Tk 3 4.19

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, was a legendary Punjabi musician from Pakistan, primarily a singer of devotional music of the Sufis (a mystical traditions of Islam). Today, he is remembered as one of if not the single greatest singer Pakistan has ever produced. He is joined by composer Peter Brian Gabriel, an English singer-songwriter, musician and humanitarian activist who rose to fame as the lead vocalist and flautist of the progressive rock band Genesis. 21. Shu-De ‘Sygt, Khoomei, Kargyraa (Styles of Throat-Singing)’ Tk 1 1.12

The band Shu-de is known for its Tuva throat singing and interpretation of Sha-manic songs. Shamanic meaning, the Shaman spiritual practice that involves reaching altered states of consciousness as a means of encountering and interacting with the spirit world with a mission to channel such transcendental energies into the world via benevolent and ma-leh-volent spirits. The end purpose is to be transformed by a higher deity to heal and make the damaged world, whole.

27. Hugh Masekela ‘District Six’ Soulplay #7 Tk 1 6.21

The Hugh Masekela story is a long and exciting one. This South African based trumpeter, two time Grammy award winning artist is Africa´s most important jazz and world musician. He has covered the globe and played with just about every top star you can think of. In the style of what’s called township Jive, District Six, led by Masekela (and at the time a rising local singer named Corlea), is the name of the former inner-city residential area in Cape Town, South Africa. The area is infamously known for the forced removal of over 60,000 of its inhabitants during the 1970s by the apartheid regime.
