Wisconsin bicyclists are being promised a say in helping shape a statewide network of bike routes.

Officials with the state Department of Natural Resources said that the Bikeways Project aims to identify priority bike corridors. State trails coordinator Brigit Brown said that she hopes riders will be able to check in while on the road.

“Eventually, we hope to have a mobile Web mapping application where someone can say, ‘I’d like to take the Great Wisconsin Route across the state,’” she said. “And they could upload that onto their mobile phone or access that via the Web and be able to, while they’re out actively biking, get that information.”

Brown said the Bikeways Project will also offer turn-by-turn directions to connect with the U.S. Bicycle Route System through neighboring states. She said there are no plans to require improvements in bike route safety.

But DNR officials said that they will hold open houses on the project this spring and fall.
