Detained Twin Ports Ship To Dock For Refueling

The U.S. Coast Guard says an ocean-going freighter that’s been anchored in Duluth-Superior for more than a month is coming into port.

Coast Guard Spokesman Christopher Yaw said the plan is to let the ship, “take on some fuel and to pump out their wastewater tanks – their sewage tanks – so kind of the fuel and some housekeeping duties right now.”

At this time, Yaw said the Liberian-flagged vessel Cornelia is still being investigated for alleged violations of federal environmental laws. The Coast Guard said the vessel may have discharged oily water before it came to the Twin Ports. The Cornelia’s 19 crewmembers haven’t been allowed to leave the ship.

The Coast Guard has been negotiating a security agreement with the German shipping company that owns the vessel. The agreement would allow the ship to leave Duluth-Superior as the investigation continues.
