Despite Dip in ACT Scores, Wis. Ranks Second in U.S.

Wisconsin continues to be a leader in ACT testing achievement. The state is ranked number two in the nation for highest overall composite scores, along with Iowa, on the four-hour college entrance exam.

Wisconsin high school students scored an average of 22.1 out of 36 possible points on the test, a slight drop from last year. State Superintendent Tony Evers is unconcerned with the dip. He believes it can be explained by the record number of students who took the exam last year.

Evers says the state is pleased with the numbers, especially because, in addition to a record number of students taking the exam, there were a record number of minority students who completed the test. “Our institutions of higher ed. and our community organizations have really been working hard to get kids of color interested in college, and understanding that they really do have some significant abilities and need to, need to consider college after high school.”

Evers would like to mandate statewide ACT testing, but he is wary of over-testing the state’s high school students.
