Wisconsin college students are meeting with Democratic lawmakers this week as part of a tour focused on college affordability.
Legislators from the Assembly and Senate joined University of Wisconsin-Madison students this week to discuss the impact of higher education costs. It was the first in a series of events across the state. Senate Minority Leader Chris Larson (D-Milwaukee), told students they also wanted to use the discussion to find out how lawmakers can help them flourish in Wisconsin.
“We also want to hear from you about what we can do as legislators to ensure that we have an economy that is set up for you to succeed,” he said.
While debt and affordability were reoccurring topics, students also voiced concern about student housing.
Genevieve Carter, a UW-Madison sophomore and a member of the school's student government body, urged lawmakers to find creative solutions to find funding for higher education. She thinks the frustration for students is that they get small fixes, but the root of the issue isn't addressed. She was glad students brought up not only their worries about loan debt, but living costs and the struggle to find internships and jobs.
