An investigation has exonerated a deceased member of the Wisconsin State Patrol in the fatal shooting of a bank robber earlier this year.

Fond Du Lac District Attorney Eric Toney said state trooper Trevor Caspar was justified in the fatal shooting of Steven Snyder during a shootout following a bank robbery on March 24.

Caspar, who was on his first solo patrol, was also killed in the shootout. Toney hailed him as a hero when describing the events that led up to the shooting.

“Trevor is a hero who, after he had already been shot by the suspect, then shot and killed the man who had already committed an armed bank robbery, stolen a vehicle and killed a Wisconsin citizen earlier that day,” he said. “Trevor’s actions resulted in him laying down his life to protect our community.”

Toney’s report found that Snyder fired the first shot, hitting Caspar while he was still in his car. Then both men got out of their cars and exchanged fire that led to both their deaths. Snyder has been linked to a string of bank robberies in Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.
