The current and former heads of the state treasure’s office are sparring over a plan that would eliminate the office entirely.

Jack Voight, a Republican who held the office from 1995 to 2007, criticized current Republican State Treasurer Matt Adamczyk’s support of a constitutional amendment that would cut the state office.

Voight made the comments Monday morning to WPR, describing the move as a “power grab” by Gov. Scott Walker and the Legislature, and said Adamczyk should be recalled for supporting the plan.

“I don’t think he gives a darn or anything else about the oath of office,” Voight said. “He doesn’t support the state Constitution or the duties he’s supposed to discharge when he was elected and sworn in as state treasurer.”

Responding to the comments, Adamczyk said he is living up to all of his constitutional duties.

Voight criticized the lack of public meetings lawmakers have had on the topic and challenged Adamczyk to a public debate. In a response, Adamczyk said he would welcome the opportunity to debate the matter.

Many responsibilities held by the office have been moved to other state agencies since the 1980s.

The state Senate is slated to vote on the amendment Tuesday. If lawmakers in both houses approve the amendment, the issue would go before voters in a statewide referendum in April 2018.
