Cross Says UW-Superior Will Continue To Get Financial Support From System

Campus Is Trying To Make Up For $4.5M Projected Shortfall

University of Wisconsin-Superior will continue to receive financial support from the UW System, despite proposed cuts from Gov. Scott Walker.

The campus is trying to make up a $4.5 million projected shortfall over the next several years. UW System President Ray Cross said Superior is receiving roughly $2 million from UW System through June of next year.

“We helped get the institution through these difficult times, and we also prepare them for a very strong future. So that commitment remains,” he said

Cuts to the UW System could mean a loss of around $2.3 million in state aid for UW-Superior based on how cuts were spread out in the last budget. UW-Superior Chancellor Renee Wachter said it’s too early to tell whether the campus would see more layoffs or program cuts.

“Until what we know for certain what we’re facing specifically, I wouldn’t want to speculate where something would or wouldn’t happen,” she said.

UW-Superior has made $1.8 million in cuts to programs and staff in the last year.
