Construction of a new $12 million cancer center is under way in northwestern Wisconsin.

The Northwest Wisconsin Cancer Center has been years in the making, according to Karen Hansen, the chief operating officer at the Memorial Medical Center in Ashland. She said the hospital is collaborating with Essentia Health in Duluth to provide radiation treatment in the area.

“Right now, if you need radiation treatment, you need to travel to Duluth daily for about six weeks for that,” she said.

Hansen said the new center removes the burden of travel for families and those suffering from the disease. She said that for some patients, the the trip to the Duluth facility represented a significant “disruption in your day.”

Hansen also said the center will also provide support services on nutrition and more to patients and their families.

Construction is expected to be completed next March.
