I am a true believer in love at first sight as I am myself a victim of this phenomenon.
The first year of law school is the most grueling. Professors, I believe, make an effort to weed out the weak at heart by subjecting students to intense interrogation, humiliation, and bullying . Recitations often ended in a student returning to their seat, exhausted and often teary-eyed. Not so for student David Reddy. When called upon in Property Law class one day to stand in front of 150 classmates and review the case assigned for homework and answer questions from the instructor, he was asked, "Are you ready, Mr. Reddy?" Dave slowly rose to his feet and responded, "I was born Reddy".
His classmates were stunned that Dave would be so brazen. I looked down the row at Dave, and placed a question mark in the margin of my paper that I directed toward my classmate. She shook her head and wrote back, "Girlfriend". My response: "Not for long".
During the 10-minute break at the midpoint of the class, Dave had taken his textbook down to the front of the auditorium to ask the professor a question. I must have shot him a ‘come hither’ look, because our eyes locked…. He closed his book and took the seat next to mine.
We had dinner that night, a drink the next. The following night he came over to my house, and he hasn’t left since. That was February 28, 1984. He is the best lawyer I know, and I am his secretary...and my love for him continues to grow.
