SACRED AND PROFANE

Program 08-10-19-A

Listen!

Al Green is often referred to as the minister of L-O-V-E. You know, a couple of candles, a backrub, and Al Green on the stereo. In 1976, Al Green put all that behind him and became a real minister – the Reverend Al Green of the Full Gospel Tabernacle Church in Memphis, Tennessee. But now he's back to his R & B roots with a new album. Next time on To the Best of Our Knowledge Al Green talks about the sacred and profane.

SEGMENT 1:

Al Green's many R & B hits made him the Minister of S-E-X until he gave it all up for gospel music and became a real minister. Now, he tells Steve Paulson, he's combined his two former selves in a new album, called "Lay It Down." And we hear several excerpt from the new record.

SEGMENT 2:

Mamak Khadem came to America from Iran to finish high school. She began to sing Persian music to stay connected to her homeland. Now, she's one of the most celebrated Iranian singers in the world. Her latest CD is called "Jostojoo." She talks with Jim Fleming about her music. Also, Anne Strainchamps talks with poet Li-Young Lee about the power of love and we hear excerpts from some of Lee's poems. His latest book is called "Behind My Eyes."

SEGMENT 3:

Michael Reilly recorded an extraordinary CD called "Como Now: The Voices of Panola County, Mississippi." He recorded the music live at Mount Mariah Church in Como, Mississippi on July 22, 2006. Reilly tells Steve Paulson how the recording came about, and how it changed Michael Reilly.
