WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE?

Are we running out of water? Science writer Fred Pearce thinks so. He's traveled the world to investigate the current state of crucial water sources. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge Pearce talks about the defining crisis of the twenty-first century. Also, we'll explore the social history of swimming pools in America. And the globalization of sushi.

SEGMENT 1:

Veteran environmentalist Fred Pearce is the author of "When the Rivers Run Dry: Water – The Defining Crisis of the Twenty First Century." He tells Steve Paulson he went to over 30 countries and discovered people are simply taking too much water out of the world's river systems.

SEGMENT 2:

Jeff Wiltse is the author of "Contested Waters: a Social History of Swimming Pools in America." He tells Anne Strainchamps how municipal pools have reflected the social tensions of American society, especially the racial tensions. Also, Julia Whitty tells Jim Fleming about her life as a master diver and film-maker among the coral reefs in the South Pacific. Her book is "The Fragile Edge: Diving and Other Adventures in the South Pacific."

SEGMENT 3:

Carl Safina is an ecologist and marine conservationist. He's the author of "Voyage of the Turtle: In Pursuit of the World's Last Dinosaur." Safina tells Jim Fleming about the leatherback turtle, which has been around for a hundred million years. They have a huge range and can withstand very cold water. Also, Sasha Issenberg is the author of "The Sushi Economy: Globalization and the Making if a Modern Delicacy." Issenberg tells Anne Strainchamps modern Sushi was born in 1971 when a Japan Airlines employee first brought Canadian tuna halfway around the world.
