Malcolm Gladwell

Malcolm Gladwell knows how to succeed in show business without really trying -- write a story for The New Yorker about a psychiatrist who studies serial killers. Then a playwright will take some of the words from your article and use them in a Broadway play. Next time on To the Best of Our Knowledge, Gladwell will share his story of plagiarism. Also, D.J. Spooky on how he takes the images, sounds and technologies that bombard us daily and transforms them into his own art.

SEGMENT 1:

Author Jonathan Lethem talks to Jim Fleming about his "Harper's" Magazine essay, "The Ecstasy of Influence: A Plagiarism." As the subtitle indicates, Jonathan Lethem appropriated the words of many authors to cover the subject of plagiarism, although he provides full attribution of his sources at the end of the essay. Also, Paul D. Miller (aka DJ Spooky, That Subliminal Kid) talks to Anne Strainchamps about his book, "Rhythm Science," and how the art of music sampling relates to plagiarism. We also hear a DJ Spooky/TTBOOK interview mashup.

SEGMENT 2:

The Honorable Richard A. Posner is a Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals, Seventh District. He's also a prolific author. His most recent book is called "The Little Book of Plagiarism." Posner talked to Steve Paulson about the history and ethics of plagiarism.

SEGMENT 3:

Journalist Malcolm Gladwell talks to Steve Paulson about how the words from one of his stories for "The New Yorker" ended up on Broadway and how this made him change his attitude about plagiarism.
