NO SMOKING

Program 06-12-31-A

Listen!

Smoking cigarettes is bad for you. Ok, we can all agree on that. So then, why are 20 percent of us still smoking? That’s 60 million Americans. And new smokers start every day. Why? It’s gotta be more than just nicotine. In this hour of To The Best Of Our Knowledge, we’ll explore the sublime pleasures of taking a puff. And, the Enlightened Tobacco Company. An "honest smoke" form the makers of DEATH Cigarettes.

SEGMENT 1:

Richard Klein is a French professor at Cornell and author of "Cigarettes Are Sublime." A non-smoker himself, Klein tells Anne Strainchamps why he feels the French ban on smoking in all public places is an encroachment on personal liberty that threatens French culture.

SEGMENT 2:

We hear a montage of people's memories of their first cigarettes. Then, Julia Hansen, author of "A Life in Smoke," tells Jim Fleming about her smoking habit, and why she chained herself to the radiator in her dining room for a week in an effort to quit.

SEGMENT 3:

Jason Reitman wrote and directed the film "Thank you for Smoking." He tells Anne Strainchamps the film is based on Christopher Buckley's book, and features Sam Elliot as the Marlborough Man. And we hear some very funny and totally subversive clips. Also, Boz Temple-Morris was co-founder and Marketing Director of the Enlightened Tobacco Company, makers of Death Cigarettes. He tells Steve Paulson the company was all about truth in advertising.
