NOIR
Crime may not pay but writing crime fiction does. Just
ask the Swedish writer, Henning Mankell. Or those who write "Tartan
Noir"...Scottish detective fiction. In this hour of To the Best
of Our Knowledge, we'll explore Northern Europe's fictional crime
wave. Also, Roger Ebert on the dark, cynical world of film noir. And some
of the most depressing songs you've even heard.
SEGMENT 1:
Stuart MacBride writes "Tartan
Noir" - darkly funny crime thrillers set in Scotland. His new one
is "Dying Light." MacBride tells Jim Fleming why he's inspired
by his native Aberdeen, and that he never makes fun of his victims even
when his cops display dark humor. Also, Steve Paulson reports
on the flourishing state of Scandinavian crime fiction. And The Residents
present some of their serialized musical radio-drama podcast called
"River of Crime."
SEGMENT 2:
Roger Ebert won the Pulitzer
Prize in 1975 and is probably the most famous movie critic in America.
He talks with Steve Paulson about the movie genre known as film noir.
Ebert's books include "The Great Movies" and "The Great
Movies II."
SEGMENT 3:
Tom Reynolds risked his mental
health to compile "I Hate Myself and Want to Die: The 52 Most Depressing
Songs You've Ever Heard." Reynolds tells Anne Strainchamps how
he managed to listen to everything and stay sane. And of course, we
hear examples.
