IDENTITY CRISIS

Program 06-03-19-B Listen!

What do you do if you're a struggling artist in search of recognition? Well, if you're Lynn Hershman Leeson, you write reviews of your work under pseudonyms and get them published in local newspapers. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, we'll find out how Hershman Leeson uses her art to explore the idea of identity. Also...Jorge Drexler, the first person from Uruguay to win an Academy Award. And the world of multiplayer online role-playing games...where you can take on any identity that you can imagine.

SEGMENT 1:

Jorge Drexler is the first person from Uruguay to win an Academy Award. Drexler won the Oscar for composing the song "Al Otro Lado del Rio," which is featured in the film, "The Motorcycle Diaries." Drexler talks to Steve Paulson about his Oscar-winning song and his identity as an immigrant. We hear samples of Drexler's music.

SEGMENT 2:

Lynn Hershman Leeson is a pioneering artist and film-maker. Her art is chronicled in a new book, "The Art and Films of Lynn Hershman Leeson: Secret Agents, Private I." Hershman Leeson talks to Anne Strainchamps about how she explores the theme of identity in her art. And we hear
a few clips from her work. Edward Castronova is the author of "Synthetic Worlds: The Business and Culture of Online Games." Castronova talks to Jim Fleming about M.M.O.R.P.G.'s, "Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games.

SEGMENT 3:

Robbie Fulks is one of the most critically-acclaimed singer/songwriters working these days. Fulks talks to To The Best Of Our Knowledge producer Doug Gordon about his latest album, "Georgia Hard," and his former identity
as a staff songwriter for a Nashville music publisher. We also hear samples of Fulks' music.
