GETTING TOGETHER

Program 05-12-18-B Listen!

To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

The holidays can be challenging. All that togetherness can be like like squishing a passel of porcupines into a sardine can. In other words - not nice. On the other hand, there is a bright side. Po Bronson found it in the lives of families across the country. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, the inspiring, true stories of families who made it through the hard times to find a little bit of transcendence. And, a pair of Jewish singer/songwriters tell us why "It's Good to be Jew at Christmas."

SEGMENT 1:

Actor/writer/comedian John McGivern grew up gay in a Catholic family in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His comedy has been featured on HBO and Comedy Central, and he plays an elf in the "Santaland Diaries" of David Sedaris. Here he shares some of his holiday memories.

SEGMENT 2:

Rob Tannnenbaum and Sean Altman wrote and perform the music and comedy show called "What I Like About Jew." While some people find it offensive, most people get into the spirit of things and laugh along with them, especially at Christmas time. They talk with Jim Fleming about the show, about being Jews at Christmas, about reactions to their humor, and we hear several excerpts from the show.

SEGMENT 3:

Laurie Notaro is the best-selling author of "An Idiot Girl's Christmas: True Tales from the Top of the Naughty List." She tells Jim Fleming about her Mom's toxic Christmas trees, and what it took to make her take her own tree down. Also, Po Bronson is a writer based in San Francisco. His latest book is called "Why Do I Love These People?" He talks with Steve Paulson about some of the families he met who managed to keep their families intact, despite hard times.
