WAR IN IRAQ

Program 05-11-06-A Listen!

To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

Chris Ayres never wanted to cover the war. He was perfectly content reporting on celebrity gossip (in L.A.). But through a twist of fate, he found himself embedded with Marines in Iraq, living in a Humvee and waiting for his death at the hands of the Republican Guard. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, a self-proclaimed coward covers the war. Also, the underground political cartoon, Get Your War On, and the historical roots of the war in Iraq.

SEGMENT 1:

George Packer is a staff writer for The New Yorker magazine and the author of "The Assassin's Gate." He's a liberal hawk who supported the war and tells Steve Paulson why he thinks America has a commitment to Iraq. Also, Gary Rosen edited a book called "The Right War? The Conservative Debate on Iraq." Rosen is a Neo-Conservative and the managing editor of "Commentary" Magazine. He describes the various lines of thought within the Conservative camp to Jim Fleming.

SEGMENT 2:

Cartoonist David Rees tells Jim Fleming that his cult hit comic, "Get Your War On", grew out of his frustration at the lack of satire in New York after 9/11. The strip became a hit on the internet and now runs in "Rolling Stone" Magazine. Also, Chris Ayres was more comfortable reporting on celebrities in Hollywood when the Times of London sent him to Iraq. The result is a book called "War Reporting for Cowards." Ayres tells Anne Strainchamps what it was like to be embedded with some real British soldiers.

SEGMENT 3:

Scottish Parliament member George Galloway is the author of "Mr. Galloway Goes to Washington." The book tells how he turned the tables on the senate subcommittee who accused him of profiting from the Iraq food-for-oil scandal that rocked the U.N. Galloway tells Steve Paulson his version of what happened on Capitol Hill, and about meeting Sadam Hussein.
