WORD!

Program 05-10-23-B Listen!

To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

Judicial activist. Neo-con. Partial birth abortion. Pro-choice. Collateral damage. Just words, right? Well, we all know that words have power. Some words can even take on a life of their own. In this hour of the 2005 Peabody award-winning To The Best Of Our Knowledge we'll take a closer look at the hidden life of words. From White House jargon to hip hop jive. And, the Alpha and Omega of all dictionaries - God's dictionary.

SEGMENT 1:

Susan Corso is the author of "God's Dictionary: Divine Definitions for Everyday Enlightenment." She tells Jim Fleming about spiritual etymology and how she interprets the root meanings of words to come up with her definitions.

SEGMENT 2:

Political scientist and linguist George Lakoff is the author most recently of "Don't Think of an Elephant: Know Your Values, Frame the Debate." He tells Steve Paulson that Conservatives have devoted a lot of thought, care and money to developing a rhetoric that advances their social agenda. They've even persuaded so-called "objective" journalists to use their language. Also, Charle Monroe Kane talks with Japanese-American rapper Tom Shimura, a.k.a. Lyrics Born, who's the founder of Quannum Records. And we hear lots of his music.

SEGMENT 3:

"Beyond the Great Mountain: A Visual Poem about China." is artist and children's book author Ed Young's latest. He says it's really about the Chinese language. Young tells Anne Strainchamps that even basic literacy in Chinese requires memorizing 4,000 characters. Also, Christopher Moore talks with Steve Paulson about untranslatable words. His book is "In Other Words: A Language Lover's Guide to the Most Intriguing Words around the World."
