NEW ORLEANS
To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio
Canal Street flooded with so much water it looks like
an actual canal. People mourning the loss of their homes and loved
ones. The Gulf Coast will never be the same after the devastation
that Hurricane Katrina has caused. In this hour of the Peabody-Award-Winning
program To the Best of Our Knowledge, we'll pay homage to
the City of New Orleans.
SEGMENT 1:
James Nolan is a poet, writer and fifth generation
New Orleans native. He went through Katrina inside his French
Quarter apartment, and tells Steve Paulson what it's been like
to be there. Also, Kalamu Ya Salaam is a writer, film-maker
and producer who evacuated New Orleans just ahead of the storm.
He tells Jim Fleming he lost his grandfather in the floods after
Hurricane Betsy in 1965, and speculates on the future New Orleans.
He thinks business interests necessitate the rebuilding of the
city, but doubts there will be any room for the thousands of poor
Black people who had called the city home and who created its
vibrant culture.
SEGMENT 2:
Film-maker Walter Williams created the "Mr.
Bill" character for "Saturday Night Live." He was
born and raised in New Orleans and has thought a lot about the
natural history of his hometown. He tells Jim Fleming that he
wasn't surprised by the havoc wrought by Katrina. Also, humorist
Roy Blount Junior believes New Orleans is the cradle of
American culture. He tells Steve Paulson why. Blount's book about
the city is called "Feet on the Street: Rambles Around New
Orleans."
SEGMENT 3:
Chuck Taggert is the producer and compiler
of a CD box set called "Doctors, Professors, Kings and Queens:
The Big Ol' Box of New Orleans." Taggert talks with Steve
Paulson about New Orleans music and we hear lots of it.
