LET'S GET LOST
Linda Ellerbee believes in taking
big bites. And she's not just talking about food. Ellerbee likes to take
big bites out of elsewhere. In fact, that's the way she defines adventure.
In this hour of the Peabody Award-winning program To the Best of Our
Knowledge, journalist Linda Ellerbee tells us about her edible journeys
around the world.
SEGMENT 1:
Journalist Linda Ellerbee
talks with Anne Strainchamps about her latest book "Take Big Bites:
Adventures around the World and across the Table." Ellerbee remembers
buying oranges in Afghanistan, visiting Vietnam a generation after the
war, and bathing in the Mediterranean to mark the passing of Julia Child.
Also, Dean King, author of "Skeletons on the Zahara: A True
Story of Survival" tells Jim Fleming about the ordeal of Captain
James Riley and his crew. They lost their ship and were enslaved by
desert nomads for months.
SEGMENT 2:
Rebecca Solnit is the author
of "A Field Guide to Getting Lost." She tells Steve Paulson
that getting lost has many meanings and that sometimes it's a good thing
if it allows you to go beyond your own constraints and comfort zones.
SEGMENT 3:
Colin Meloy likes to lose
himself in music. He's the songwriter and lead singer of a band called
The Decenberists. Doug Gordon prepared this profile. And we hear lots
of music.
