THE NEW TOONS
To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio
The public sees a politician one way. A political
cartoonist sees something else entirely. What makes a good political
cartoon? We'll get some answers from Steve Brodner, one of the most
savage illustrators at work in the United States. It's The New Toons
in this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge.
SEGMENT 1:
Novelist Peter Carey talks with Steve Paulson
about the trip he describes in his book "Wrong about Japan:
A Father's Journey with His Son." Carey took his then 12
year old son Charley to meet directors of Japanese anime films
and creators of manga comics. Carey saw evidence of the Japanese
experience of WWII everywhere, but his hosts assured him he was
incapable of understanding their culture. We hear excerpts from
Japanese films and TV shows to illustrate Carey's remarks.
SEGMENT 2:
We hear a montage of some animation classics, and
Jim Fleming talks with Robert Mankoff and Roz Chast.
Mankoff is cartoon editor for the New Yorker, where Chast is a
staff artist. Robert Mankoff is also the editor of a huge book
called "The Complete Cartoons of the New Yorker." Mankoff
and Chast tell Jim Fleming what characterized New Yorker cartoons
of the past, and how new cartoons are edited at the magazine.
SEGMENT 3:
Marjane Satrapi is the author of the best-selling
"Persepolis" and "Persepolis 2." Her new graphic
novel is called "embroideries." She talks with Anne
Strainchamps about the intimate lives of women in Iran and the
conflicts created around the issue of sexuality by patriarchy
and fundamentalist Islam. Also, Steve Brodner tells Steve
Paulson what makes a good political cartoon. His work's been collected
in a book called "Freedom Fries: The Political Art of Steve
Brodner."
