STAYING POWER

Program 05-07-24-B Listen!

To The Best of Our Knowledge
from Wisconsin Public Radio

It's the longest-running prime-time animated series in TV history...with sixteen seasons and more than 350 episodes. So far. Not bad for a four-fingered family whose first gig was doing animated segments on a TV variety show. In this hour of the Peabody Award Winning Program To the Best of Our Knowledge, we'll look at the staying power of America's favorite nuclear family, "The Simpsons."

SEGMENT 1:

Chris Turner is the author of "Planet Simpson: How A Carton Masterpiece Defined A Generation." He tells Jim Fleming why the longest-running TV show has been such a hit, and we hear lots of clips. Also, Stephen Hall is the author of critically-acclaimed histories of contemporary science, including "Merchants of Immortality: Chasing the Dream of Human Life Extension." He talks with Anne Strainchamps about living longer and the possibility of living forever.

SEGMENT 2:

TTBOOK producer Doug Gordon prepared this profile of the band NRBQ which stands for New Rhythm and Blues Quartet. They've been called the world's greatest bar band, but prefer to say they play "omni-pop," and explain that's why they've lasted for over 35 years.

SEGMENT 3:

Jared Diamond won a Pulitzer Prize for his book "Guns, Germs and Steel." Now he's written "Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed." He discusses a few case histories - like Easter Island - with Steve Paulson.
